I serve as the Journal Star’s sole social media editor, distributing local journalism through its core platforms, leading the daily management and programming of local news, breaking news, reader callouts and evergreen stories on X and Facebook. I developed and launched social media strategies for Instagram, Reddit and Threads.
I work as the only SEO in the newsroom, generating buy-in and working to train the newsroom on best practices. I handle daily and long-term digital planning and packaging. I create weekly analytics reports to relay to the newsroom and use analytics to make real-time decisions for elevating journalism and developing related digital strategies. I optimized individual articles through on-page optimization including headlines, subheadings, internal links, keyword research and image optimization.
I serve as the Journal Star’s Saturday editor, leading both print and online breaking news and weekend event coverage. I also oversee a reporter covering high-interest, trending topics and work to identify and assign stories that have high-audience potential.
I worked as an audience engagement producer for Florida's largest newspaper, where I learned from and worked with a team of experienced audience journalists. I helped manage and write sharp language for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.

I worked with reporters and editors to develop social roll-out plans for big project drops. This is perhaps best illustrated through my work on an important story about area schools struggling to pass state tests. Before the social plan went into effect, the story had 200 page views. After, traffic had increased 100-fold. Impactful stories cannot be impactful unless they are read.
I produced social visual assets ranging from quote cards to Instagram carousels to short video clips.
I wrote daily newsletters, curating the biggest news of the day and relayed to readers via email. I wrote stories based on social listening and distributed them.
At my hometown paper, I worked as an audience growth intern. I ran The Star’s Instagram page, growing its audience by 20,000 with a focus on breaking and shareable news. I managed its Twitter and Facebook feeds using SocialFlow.

I rewrote headlines, optimized content for SEO, sent push notifications, re-packaged content and tracked daily user engagement using Parse.ly. I worked in tandem with the city library to write a weekly local history piece answering questions submitted by readers.
I curated stories from the day’s reporting and turned them into newsletters, each targeted to specific audiences. I ensured articles received proper treatment on The Star’s website and worked closely with each section editor.
I also reported on how the pandemic affected a rural Missouri tourist town.
This piece was an experimental project for Lee Enterprises, the Journal Star's parent company. As part of the experiment, the page was paywall-free for about one month to inform voters and turn readers into subscribers. The experiment will be taken company-wide for the November general election. I pitched the project, wrote the copy, crafted a social plan and tracked analytics.
